The overview

My New York, the short version

New York is the city I keep coming back to. It's loud, fast and expensive, but it pays you back if you plan it like a local. These are my notes from real trips, what I actually do and what I skip.

Where I stay

I like Midtown or NoMad so I can walk almost everywhere. Arlo Midtown and Arlo NoMad are my go-tos: small rooms, great location, fair prices for Manhattan.

How I'd spend a first trip

Start with Central Park in the morning, take the ferry to the Statue of Liberty, and save one evening for a skyline view at sunset. Use the subway, not taxis.

Before you go

Book the big tours early, wear real walking shoes, and leave room in the plan for wandering. That's the best part of the city.
