By Alex Fernandes

How I compare Allianz and World Nomads: who each suits, current plans and limits, what isn’t covered, and which to pick for your trip.

My verdict

Which one should you pick?

It’s a safety net for the money you’ve already spent and the bills you didn’t plan for. The core benefits are usually:

Travel insurance is the part of trip planning nobody gets excited about, but it’s one of the things I check before I book. Glacier hikes, boat tours and weather delays in Iceland are exactly the kind of trip where I want cover in place.

Two names come up again and again: Allianz Travel Insurance and World Nomads. They suit different travelers. Here’s how I compare them, with plan names and limits checked on both official sites in October 2026.

Quick pick: heading off on an active trip? Start with World Nomads’ US plans. Protecting a pricey, pre-paid vacation? Look at Allianz.

Which one should you pick?

  • Adventure trips, hiking, diving, skiing: World Nomads. Every US plan covers 250+ activities, and the Explorer and Epic plans add more.
  • Expensive pre-paid trips, cruises, family vacations: Allianz. OneTrip Prime offers up to $100,000 in trip cancellation per traveler, and kids 17 and under can be covered free with a parent or grandparent (not on Pennsylvania policies).
  • Travelers 70 or older: not World Nomads. Its US plans are for ages 18 to 69.
  • Several trips a year: both have annual plans. World Nomads caps each trip at 45 days; Allianz AllTrips Basic excludes trips longer than 45 days.

What travel insurance covers

It’s a safety net for the money you’ve already spent and the bills you didn’t plan for. The core benefits are usually:

  • Trip cancellation and interruption for covered reasons like illness or a family emergency.
  • Emergency medical care and medical evacuation abroad.
  • Baggage loss, damage or delay.
  • Trip delay expenses like meals and a hotel.
  • 24/7 assistance when something goes wrong mid-trip.

Not every plan includes all of these, so the plan name matters more than the brand.

Allianz Travel Insurance

Allianz is built around classic vacation protection: cancellation, interruption and medical, with lots of plan choices. It’s for US residents and suits family trips, cruises and road trips.

Allianz single-trip plans

  • OneTrip Basic: cancellation and interruption plus limited post-departure benefits.
  • OneTrip Prime: the most popular plan. Up to $100,000 trip cancellation, up to $150,000 trip interruption, up to $50,000 emergency medical and up to $500,000 emergency medical transportation, for trips up to 180 days. Pre-existing condition coverage is available.
  • OneTrip Premier: Prime’s benefits with nearly double the post-departure limits.
  • OneTrip Emergency Medical: medical and travel mishaps, no cancellation cover.
  • OneTrip Cancellation Plus: cancellation and interruption only, aimed at domestic trips.

Allianz annual plans

  • AllTrips Basic: no trip cancellation. Up to $20,000 emergency medical and up to $100,000 medical transportation per trip; trips over 45 days are excluded.
  • AllTrips Prime: adds up to $3,000 cancellation and interruption per year.
  • AllTrips Executive and AllTrips Premier: higher, tiered limits; Premier can cover your whole household.

World Nomads

World Nomads is made for active, independent travelers. Its US plans (for US residents aged 18 to 69) are where adventure cover shines.

World Nomads US plans

  • Standard: up to $125,000 emergency medical, up to $400,000 medical evacuation, up to $2,500 trip cancellation, 250+ activities.
  • Explorer: up to $150,000 medical, up to $500,000 evacuation, up to $10,000 cancellation, 300+ activities, plus missed connection and rental car damage.
  • Epic: up to $250,000 medical, up to $700,000 evacuation, up to $15,000 cancellation, 340+ activities.
  • Annual: up to $100,000 medical and up to $5,000 trip interruption, for multiple trips of up to 45 days each.

Single-trip plans cover trips up to 180 days, and you can buy one after you’ve already left home (some benefits have a waiting period). Cancel for Any Reason is an optional add-on on Explorer (up to 50% back) and Epic (up to 75%), not available in New York. US plans don’t include personal liability cover.

What travel insurance doesn’t cover

  • Trips close to home: World Nomads excludes expenses within 100 miles of your home, and Allianz annual plans cover trips 100+ miles away.
  • Illegal or reckless acts, including losses while intoxicated.
  • Pre-existing conditions, unless your plan includes a waiver and you bought it in time.
  • Missing documents: being denied boarding or entry because you lacked a visa or REAL ID usually isn’t covered.
  • Activities beyond your plan’s list, or above its altitude and depth limits.
  • Costs other cover should pay first: World Nomads is secondary insurance, so you claim from your health plan or airline first.

Some travel credit cards include trip protection too. I compare them in my favorite travel credit cards.

FAQ

Is annual or single-trip travel insurance better?

If you take two or more trips a year, an annual plan can be simpler. Both annual plans here limit each trip to 45 days, so long trips need a single-trip plan.

Is there an age limit for World Nomads?

Yes. World Nomads US plans are for travelers aged 18 to 69. For Allianz, eligibility depends on the plan, so check it when you get a quote.

Can I buy travel insurance after I’ve left home?

With World Nomads, yes. You can buy a plan while already traveling, though some benefits start after a waiting period.

What is Cancel for Any Reason coverage?

It’s an optional add-on that refunds part of your non-refundable costs if you cancel for a reason your plan doesn’t list. On World Nomads it’s available on Explorer (up to 50%) and Epic (up to 75%), if you cancel at least two days before departure. It’s not available in New York.

Are kids covered for free?

Allianz OneTrip Prime covers kids 17 and under free with a parent or grandparent (not on Pennsylvania policies). World Nomads lets you add up to seven dependents under 25 to a single-trip plan at no extra cost.
