There is a lot you can fit into two days at Niagara Falls without trying to do everything.

For this trip, I traveled with my friends Karen and Rayla. It was their first time visiting Niagara Falls, so I was excited to experience it with them. We drove from New Jersey early in the morning, stayed entirely on the U.S. side of Niagara Falls, and spent one night close to Niagara Falls State Park.

Our weekend included an aerial view of the Falls, Niagara after dark, Maid of the Mist, good food, and enough downtime that the trip never felt like a race. Here is exactly how we spent our two days.

Niagara Falls trip at a glance

  • Trip length: 2 days and 1 night, entirely on the U.S. side

  • Getting there: We drove from New Jersey. If you fly, Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) is about 30 miles from Niagara Falls State Park.

  • Where we stayed: Quality Hotel & Suites At The Falls, within walking distance of the falls

  • Highlights: Rainbow Air helicopter flight, the falls lit up at night, Niagara Falls State Park with a local guide, and Maid of the Mist

  • Park entry: Niagara Falls State Park is open 24 hours a day, year-round, and it is free to walk in. Parking is paid.

  • Passport: Not needed on the U.S. side, but you do need one to cross to the Canadian side.

Day 1 — Road trip, helicopter views, and Niagara at night

Leaving New Jersey

We left New Jersey around 4 AM. It was an early start, but it gave us most of the first day in Niagara instead of losing the day to the drive. Once we arrived, we stopped for lunch at a local Indian restaurant before heading to the hotel.

Where we stayed

We checked into Quality Hotel & Suites At The Falls around 3 PM. For a short trip, the location worked well because we were within walking distance of the falls and close to Niagara Falls State Park and the main attractions. We could drop off our bags and get straight back out to explore.

A quick Rainbow Bridge warning

While driving in the area, we nearly entered the Rainbow Bridge and crossed into Canada by mistake. The roads near the border can be confusing, and it is easy to choose the wrong lane when following the GPS.

Crossing accidentally could turn a simple wrong turn into a major delay. You may have to pay the bridge toll, complete Canadian border inspection, turn around, and then go through U.S. border inspection to return. It could create even more serious complications if anyone in the car does not have the required travel documents.

We noticed the mistake in time and remained on the U.S. side. If you are driving to an attraction near the border, follow the road signs carefully and double-check that your GPS is not directing you toward the bridge to Canada.

Rainbow Air helicopter flight

At 4 PM, we flew with Rainbow Air Helicopter Tours. It was Karen and Rayla’s first time in a helicopter, which made the experience even more memorable for all of us. The flight lasted about 12–15 minutes and gave us a full aerial view of the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Horseshoe Falls, the Niagara River, and both sides of the border.

Tickets were $185 when paying by card or $180 cash. Twelve to fifteen minutes sounds short until you are actually above the falls. Seeing the entire system from the air makes it much easier to understand its scale.

Helicopter flights are weather-dependent, so I would leave some flexibility around the scheduled time.

Niagara Falls after dark

After a short break at the hotel, we returned to the falls around 7 PM. Even if you see Niagara during the day, it is worth returning after dark. The atmosphere changes once the falls are illuminated, and it gave us a completely different view from the helicopter experience earlier that afternoon.

Dinner and casino night

Around 8 PM, we drove to LongHorn Steakhouse for dinner. We finished the night at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino in downtown Niagara Falls before returning to the hotel.

Day 2 — Niagara Falls State Park and Maid of the Mist

We started around 9 a.m. with our guide, Greg, a Niagara Falls local who was born and raised in the area. His connection to the city showed in the way he talked about the Falls. Sharing local history and stories while helping us navigate the park, tickets, and attractions. Having someone who genuinely knew the area made the beginning of our day feel much more personal than simply following a map.

Maid of the Mist

At around 11 AM, it was time for Maid of the Mist. The boat leaves from the U.S. side, passes the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, and heads toward Horseshoe Falls.

You receive a poncho, but expect to feel the mist anyway. The sound and force of the water are completely different from what you experience at the overlooks above. This is the one attraction I would recommend to almost every first-time visitor.

Lunch at The Red Coach Inn

After the boat tour, we had lunch at The Red Coach Inn, just steps from Niagara Falls State Park. After a full morning walking through the park and getting wet on the boat, it was the right place to slow down and have a proper meal.

One last break before driving home

We returned to the hotel after lunch and spent some time in the hot tub before checking out around 2 PM. That break made the drive back to New Jersey much easier.

Know before you go: Niagara Falls planning tips

Best time to visit

Niagara Falls State Park is open all year, but most of the big attractions are seasonal. In 2026, Maid of the Mist runs from April 24 to November 8, and the full Cave of the Winds walkways, including the Hurricane Deck, are open from May to October. Late spring through early fall gives you the most options.

The falls are lit up every night starting at dusk, from around 8:30 PM in midsummer to 4:30 PM in November and December. From May 15 to October 12, 2026, there are also fireworks over the falls every night at 10 PM, weather permitting.

The park’s parking lots tend to fill up early on weekends (including Fridays) and holidays, so an early start helps.

Getting there and getting around

  • By car: Parking Lot 1 (333 Prospect Street) is the closest to the Welcome Center and Maid of the Mist. When it fills up, the Goat Island lots (2 and 3) are the next best option. To avoid backups on the Niagara Scenic Parkway, the park suggests coming in on Route 62/Niagara Falls Blvd or using 10 Rainbow Blvd as your GPS address. And remember my Rainbow Bridge warning above.

  • By plane: Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) is about 30 miles away. Before you fly, make sure your ID meets the REAL ID requirements.

  • Inside the park: Most viewpoints are walkable. The Niagara Scenic Trolley loops the park about every 30 minutes, and one ticket is good all day. Uber and Lyft also operate throughout Niagara Falls, USA.

Parking and key costs (2026)

  • State park parking: Lots 1 and 2 charge $10 a day most of the year, and $10 Monday–Thursday or $15 Friday–Sunday from May 22 to October 11. Lot 3 on Goat Island is free Tuesday through Thursday. Keep your receipt for same-day re-entry.

  • Maid of the Mist: $30.25 for adults and $19.75 for children 6–12, and kids 5 and under ride free with a paid adult. The ticket includes the elevator and the observation deck. The boat tour lasts about 20 minutes, boats leave about every 15 minutes, and everyone boards first-come, first-served, even with an online ticket. The boats run rain or shine.

  • Cash: There are no ATMs inside the park, but banks are within walking distance in downtown Niagara Falls.

Prices and schedules change, so double-check the official sites before you go.

U.S. side vs. Canadian side

Niagara Falls is actually three waterfalls: the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Horseshoe Falls. Together they straddle the U.S.–Canada border. Staying on the U.S. side means no border crossing at all. Niagara Falls State Park, Maid of the Mist (which only boards in Niagara Falls, New York), and Cave of the Winds are all on the American side.

If you want to see the Canadian side too, bring your passport. To come back into the U.S. by land, U.S. citizens can use a passport, passport card, Enhanced Driver’s License, or a Trusted Traveler card such as NEXUS. If you are continuing into Ontario, my 48 hours in Toronto guide makes a great next stop.

What to pack

  • A waterproof phone pouch or dry bag. Maid of the Mist hands out a hooded poncho, but you will still get wet. The lower deck toward the back of the boat tends to stay the driest.

  • Comfortable shoes that can handle wet walkways and a lot of walking around the park.

  • An extra layer for the evening if you plan to see the falls lit up at night.

  • No drone. Drones are prohibited in Niagara Falls State Park because of an FAA flight restriction over the falls.

For more planning help, see my guides on how to save money on accommodation and planning your next trip step by step.

Would I do Niagara Falls in two days again?

Absolutely. Two days on the U.S. side gave us enough time to experience the major highlights without packing every hour with another attraction.

The balance made the trip work: one major experience on the first afternoon, time to see Niagara after dark, and most of the second morning dedicated to Niagara Falls State Park and Maid of the Mist.

If I planned the same trip again, I would keep the Rainbow Air flight, Niagara at night, Maid of the Mist, lunch at The Red Coach Inn, and a hotel close enough to the park that we would not waste time driving back and forth.
